In short
The market treats this as very unlikely โ close to ruled out, but not quite dismissed. The single biggest reason is that no legal route to a transfer runs without the consent of Denmark and of Greenland's own parliament, and both have refused publicly and repeatedly; a purchase or handover also needs money and legislation from a US Congress that has never taken up the idea. What would move the price is a formal negotiation being announced โ a signed framework, an executive order directing a transfer, or a Greenlandic vote scheduled on the question โ rather than another round of statements.

What moves the probability
Danish and Greenlandic consent
No consensual transfer is possible without a Greenlandic decision and Danish constitutional action, and both governments have refused in public. This is the dominant reason the probability is low, and it is the only driver whose reversal would move the price by tens of points rather than a few. A scheduled Greenlandic referendum on association with the United States would be the clearest single signal.
US legislative and fiscal path
A purchase requires appropriations; a treaty requires two-thirds of the Senate; a territorial acquisition requires enabling legislation. Nothing of the kind has been introduced. Until a bill or a signed executive instrument exists, the market has no object to price, which caps the probability regardless of rhetoric.
Escalation short of annexation
Washington already has extensive rights on the island under the 1951 defence agreement with Denmark, including at Pituffik. An expanded military footprint, mineral concessions or a free-association proposal could be presented as a change of status and would push the probability up. But measures that stop short of sovereignty leave the question resolving No.
Alliance cost
Coercing a NATO founding member would put Article 5 credibility in question and invite a European response, which is a restraint on how far the administration goes. This driver pushes the probability down and is why repeated statements have not repriced the market. It weakens if Washington shows willingness to absorb that cost.
The five-month clock
Settlement is 31 December 2026. Even a fully cooperative process โ negotiation, Greenlandic vote, Danish and US legislation โ would strain that window, and the market prices the calendar as much as the politics. Any slippage in a hypothetical timetable resolves the question No by default.
The case for
- A Yes needs the United States and Denmark to announce, before 31 December 2026, an agreement or official act placing Greenland under US sovereignty โ and under the rules the announcement alone is enough, with no completed transfer required.
- The most plausible route is not a purchase but a negotiated arrangement in which Greenland moves toward independence from Denmark and simultaneously into association with Washington, presented as a change of sovereignty.
- The United States already operates on the island under the 1951 defence agreement, so a change of formal status would not require building anything new โ only signing something.
- Sustained economic pressure on Copenhagen, combined with Greenlandic factions that favour separation from Denmark, is the mechanism by which an outcome most observers call impossible could become a negotiation.
The case against
- Greenland's 2009 Self-Government Act places the decision on its future status with Greenlanders, and Danish and Greenlandic leaders have both stated publicly that the territory is not for sale.
- Polling reported in early 2025 showed large Greenlandic majorities against joining the United States, which makes any referendum route a likely loss rather than a formality.
- No bill, treaty or executive instrument directing a transfer exists in Washington, and the Senate and appropriations steps a real acquisition would need have not begun.
- With five months to the settlement date, the sequence of votes and legislation required cannot realistically be completed or even formally agreed in the time available.

Resolution rules
The outcome is determined by official statements from the governments of the United States, Denmark and Greenland, or where those are unclear, by a consensus of credible reporting. The deadline is 31 December 2026 at 11:59 PM ET. It resolves Yes only if the United States has officially announced that the majority of Greenland will move from its status as an autonomous territory of the Kingdom of Denmark to formal US governance or jurisdiction, as a state, territory or other classification. An official joint US-Denmark announcement counts even before any transfer is completed, provided it rests on an official agreement or action such as an executive order or signed legislation. Social media posts alone are explicitly insufficient. Anything else, including negotiations without a signed instrument, resolves No. Polymarket and Predict.fun list the question on these terms, with Predict.fun applying its own settlement process.

What to watch
Common questions
- What exactly has to happen for this to resolve Yes?
- The United States must officially announce, by 31 December 2026 at 11:59 PM ET, that Greenland will come under US sovereignty โ meaning most of the territory moves from autonomous territory of the Kingdom of Denmark to formal US governance as a state, territory or other classification. A joint US-Denmark announcement counts even if the transfer is incomplete, so long as it rests on an official agreement or action such as an executive order or signed legislation. Statements on social media alone do not qualify.
- What does a low price on this contract actually mean?
- The price is the market's estimate of the chance, expressed as a number between zero and one. A contract at 0.30 would mean roughly a three-in-ten chance; a price in the low single digits in cents means participants think the outcome is possible but improbable. It is not a forecast from any institution โ it is the level at which buyers and sellers currently agree to trade.
- Could Greenland leave Denmark on its own?
- Yes, in principle. The 2009 Self-Government Act gives Greenland the right to pursue full independence, initiated by Greenlanders and confirmed by referendum. But independence from Denmark is not the same as US sovereignty, and an independent Greenland would resolve this question No unless the United States simultaneously announced that the territory was coming under its jurisdiction.
- What if talks are announced but nothing is signed by the end of the year?
- That resolves No. The rules require an official agreement or action โ an executive order, signed legislation or a formal joint announcement resting on one. Negotiations, letters of intent reported second-hand, or presidential statements without an underlying act do not meet the standard.
- Why is trading volume so large if the market is so confident?
- High volume on a lopsided market usually reflects news attention rather than disagreement. Each escalation in rhetoric draws new participants who buy the small chance, and existing holders sell it to them. The $38,755,192 traded across venues measures how much attention the Greenland story commands, not how uncertain the answer is.
- Do the two venues settle this the same way?
- Both work from official statements by the US, Danish and Greenlandic governments, or from a consensus of credible reporting, against the same 31 December 2026 deadline. Predict.fun applies its own settlement process. In an ambiguous case โ for instance a free-association deal that stops short of full sovereignty โ that difference in process is where a gap between venue prices could appear.
