What moves the probability
Pace of the Kreminna-Yampil push
Russian advances toward Lyman from the north and east have moved in small increments โ villages and tree lines, not towns โ over the past two years. At that pace, capturing and holding the entire municipality within the time remaining is a high bar, which pushes the probability down.
Priority given to Pokrovsk and Kostiantynivka
Russian command has directed the bulk of its Donbas manpower toward Pokrovsk and Kostiantynivka rather than Lyman through 2024 and 2025. Unless that changes, Lyman remains a secondary front, which limits the resources available for a rapid push.
River line as a defensive asset
The Siverskyi Donets river runs near Lyman and has favored Ukrainian defense since the town was recaptured in October 2022. Crossing and holding ground across it under fire is materially harder than advancing across open fields, weighing against a fast Russian breakthrough.
ISW's strict resolution standard
The rule requires the whole municipality shaded red and that shading to persist through a further daily update, with infiltration areas excluded. This is stricter than simply reporting fighting inside the town, and it lowers the chance the market resolves Yes even if partial Russian gains occur.
Possible frontline freeze from negotiations
Any ceasefire or negotiated frontline freeze during 2026 would lock in whatever lines exist at that point. If talks progress before Lyman is fully captured, that would cap the probability regardless of battlefield momentum elsewhere.
The case for
- Russian forces have been advancing on Lyman's northern and eastern approaches through Torske and Yampil since 2024, and continued pressure without major Ukrainian reinforcement could compound over the remaining months of 2026.
- If Russian command concludes its offensives at Pokrofsk or Kostiantynivka and redirects units toward the Lyman axis, the pace of advance in this sector could accelerate meaningfully.
- A sustained crossing of the Siverskyi Donets north of the town would threaten to encircle or cut off Ukrainian positions inside Lyman itself, which would materially raise the odds of full capture before the deadline.
The case against
- Full capture of Lyman would require controlling contested river terrain that has favored Ukrainian defense since Ukraine recaptured the town in October 2022.
- Russian forces have prioritized Pokrovsk and Kostiantynivka over the Lyman axis for most of 2024 and 2025, leaving this sector a secondary effort with limited resources committed to it.
- ISW's rule that the entire municipality must be shaded red and that shading must persist through a further full update cycle sets a bar that slow, incremental gains have not come close to meeting.
- Any ceasefire or negotiated frontline freeze reached during 2026 would fix current lines short of full capture, regardless of any localized Russian gains.
