What moves the probability
Narrow strike definition
Only a direct air strike or surface-to-surface missile strike against the other country's territory counts against the ceasefire. Naval fire, cyber operations, ground incursions and intercepted munitions are explicitly excluded, which removes most of the friction that has actually occurred from affecting the outcome.
Short settlement window
The question only needs to hold through 15 October 2026, a 48-hour horizon from the point of writing. Shorter windows mechanically reduce the odds that any single new escalation trigger emerges in time, which is the main reason the price sits so high.
US diplomatic and military posture
American military support for Israel and continued US diplomatic engagement with regional mediators have been central to sustaining the truce. Any shift in that posture โ reduced pressure, a changed security guarantee, or a US response to an incident involving its own forces โ could alter either side's calculus.
Proxy and militia activity
Clashes involving Hezbollah, Houthi forces or Iran-aligned militias in Iraq and Syria continue at a lower intensity. These do not count toward settlement directly but could escalate into a response that does cross the qualifying threshold if either Israel or Iran retaliates against the other's territory.
Single-venue pricing
With all $522,213 of tracked volume on one venue, the 97% figure reflects a relatively concentrated set of market participants rather than a broad cross-market consensus, which can make the price more sensitive to a single large trade than a deeper, multi-venue market would be.
The case for
- No qualifying air strike or surface-to-surface missile strike is initiated by either Israel or Iran against the other's territory before 15 October 2026, 11:59 PM Iran Standard Time.
- Both governments continue restricting themselves to proxy and lower-intensity actions, which the settlement rules explicitly exclude from counting as a breach.
- US diplomatic engagement and military presence in the region continue to provide enough deterrence or reassurance to both sides to avoid direct escalation in this specific window.
- No new intelligence trigger โ such as evidence of imminent nuclear-related activity or a lethal strike on a senior official โ emerges that would prompt either side to cross the line.
The case against
- Israel initiates a strike against an Iranian target it assesses as an imminent threat, such as a missile production or launch site, before the window closes.
- Iran responds directly to an Israeli action against an Iran-aligned proxy with a strike on Israeli territory rather than retaliating through proxies alone.
- An incident involving US forces in the region draws a direct Israeli or Iranian response that qualifies under the settlement definition.
- A rapidly developing event in the final 48 hours โ not currently visible in public reporting โ produces a strike that meets the settlement bar before the 15 October 2026 cutoff.
