Context
What moves the probability
Visible mobilisation, or its absence
An offensive against Taiwan requires weeks of pre-positioning: sealift concentration in Fujian and Zhejiang ports, fuel and munitions movement, reserve call-ups. Commercial satellite imagery and open-source analysts would flag it well before any landing. The continued absence of such reporting is the single largest force holding the probability down; credible evidence of it would move the price more than any statement from Beijing.
The offshore islands
Kinmen and Matsu lie a few kilometres from the Chinese mainland and are far easier to take than the main island; the inhabited Pratas group sits isolated in the South China Sea. Any of these would satisfy the settlement criteria. This is the main reason the market prices a small non-zero chance rather than dismissing the question outright.
Definitional exclusions
The rules explicitly do not count blockades, quarantines, exercises or incursions. Beijing's demonstrated preference is for exactly those tools, which impose cost without crossing the threshold of war. This asymmetry caps the probability: a year of escalating coercion can still resolve No.
US posture and deterrence signals
The 1979 Taiwan Relations Act, continued arms deliveries and US force presence in Japan and Guam form the deterrent the market is implicitly pricing. Visible strengthening pushes the probability lower; a credible sign that Washington would not respond, or a crisis that pulls US attention and munitions elsewhere, pushes it higher.
The shrinking calendar
Only five months remain to 31 December 2026, and monsoon and typhoon conditions restrict practical windows for an amphibious operation. Each passing week without mobilisation mechanically lowers the chance of a Yes resolution, independent of any change in Beijing's intent.
The case for
- A Chinese move against Kinmen, Matsu or the inhabited Pratas Islands โ militarily far cheaper than an assault on the main island โ would satisfy the settlement criteria on its own.
- A miscalculation could escalate faster than either side intends: coast guard confrontations near Kinmen and near-daily PLA air activity across the median line create repeated opportunities for a lethal incident that hardens into an operation to seize ground.
- Beijing has never renounced force and the 2005 Anti-Secession Law provides a domestic legal basis for acting without warning if it judges peaceful unification foreclosed.
- If US attention, munitions stocks or carrier availability were pulled into another theatre before December, the deterrence calculation the market relies on would weaken within the settlement window.
The case against
- An amphibious invasion cannot be concealed; the shipping, fuel, munitions and reserve mobilisation required would be visible weeks in advance, and no such build-up has been reported with five months left on the clock.
- The settlement rules exclude blockades, quarantines, exercises and incursions โ the instruments Beijing has actually used since 2024 โ so an intense year of coercion still resolves No.
- Weather in the Taiwan Strait leaves only a narrow seasonal window for amphibious operations, and the remaining calendar in 2026 is unfavourable.
- Roughly $39.2 million of trading has produced a completely flat price series across 177 recorded observations, which indicates no participant committing substantial capital has seen a reason to revise the assessment.
