How the contract works
Each contract here is a claim on one named candidate becoming President of France. It settles at $1 if that person is elected and at nothing if they are not, so the price is simply what buyers and sellers currently agree the chance is: a contract trading at 0.30 would mean the market thinks the outcome happens about three times in ten. Settlement follows the official result published by the French Ministry of the Interior after the runoff, expected around late April 2027, and the market resolves against whoever is elected — under the two-round system a candidate above 50% in the first round wins outright, otherwise the runoff decides it. Companion contracts exist for each other prospective candidate. If no result is known by 31 December 2027, the market resolves to "Other". A position does not have to be held to the end; it can normally be sold at whatever the price is at that moment.

A market that does not move is a market that considers the question effectively closed — here, closed by the immediate-effect ineligibility imposed in March 2025 rather than by anything that happened in the last week. The aggregate history in this event, opening at 97% with a recorded range of 69% to 100% and a 30.8-point spread between the highest and lowest venue reading, does not track the Le Pen contract itself; it reflects differently framed contracts inside the same candidate complex, and no publicly reported event accounts for a fall from the high nineties to the floor. The honest reading is that the Le Pen price has been at or near its floor for as long as the ineligibility has stood, and it will stay there until a court says otherwise.

Context
France votes for a president in the spring of 2027, with the first round expected in April and a runoff two weeks later. Emmanuel Macron cannot stand again, having served two consecutive terms, so this is the first open presidential contest in France since 2012 — no incumbent, and no obvious centrist successor with his name recognition.
Marine Le Pen has been the defining figure of the French far right for fifteen years. She reached the runoff in 2017 and again in 2022, losing to Macron both times but improving substantially the second time, and her Rassemblement National became the largest single party in the National Assembly after the 2024 snap election. On paper she was the best-placed opposition candidate for 2027.
That changed in March 2025, when a Paris court convicted her over the misuse of European Parliament funds to pay party staff and imposed five years of ineligibility for public office, applied with immediate effect rather than suspended pending appeal. She appealed, and the appeal process was scheduled to conclude in time for a ruling before the 2027 campaign. In the meantime, RN president Jordan Bardella has been positioned as the movement's candidate if the ban stands. The market on Le Pen personally is therefore a market on two things at once: a legal ruling and an internal party decision — not on her standing with voters.
The consensus across venues sits at 1%. That is not a market saying Le Pen would lose a runoff — French polling has repeatedly shown the far-right candidate competitive in a second round. It is a market saying she is unlikely to be on the ballot at all. Ineligibility applied with immediate effect is a hard constraint: candidacies must be formally filed and validated by the Conseil constitutionnel in the weeks before the first round, and a standing ban leaves no route around that deadline. A price this low is the market pricing a legal status, not an electoral one.

What would actually move this is narrow and datable. A definitive appeal ruling that overturns the conviction, or that keeps a conviction but removes or suspends the ineligibility, would restore her legal capacity to run. That alone would not be enough: the RN would then have to unwind Bardella's candidacy, and a party that has spent two years constructing a succession does not reverse it costlessly. Both conditions are required, and the market is pricing the joint probability of both, which is why the number sits at the floor rather than in the single-digit-to-teens range that a legal question alone might justify.
For context on the downside case being priced away: even in the scenario where she runs, she has lost two runoffs. The 2022 result was her best, and it was still a defeat by a wide margin. Any path to victory requires both the legal clearance and a second-round coalition that has never yet assembled for her — which is why the market's low number is over-determined rather than fragile.
What moves the probability
The appeal ruling on ineligibility
The five-year ban from public office was applied with immediate effect in March 2025, which is the single mechanical reason the price sits at the floor. A ruling that removes or suspends the ineligibility is the only development that would push this probability up by more than a rounding error. A ruling that confirms it effectively ends the question before the campaign begins.
Bardella's entrenchment as RN candidate
Jordan Bardella has been the party's presumptive candidate since the conviction, with his own contract in the same market complex. Every month of that arrangement raises the cost of a switch back to Le Pen even if she is cleared. This driver pushes the Le Pen probability down and the RN-successor probability up, independently of the courts.
Candidacy filing deadlines
Candidates must be sponsored and validated by the Conseil constitutionnel in the weeks preceding the April 2027 first round. A favourable ruling that arrives after that window closes has no effect on the outcome. Timing, not just substance, determines whether a legal reversal matters.
The two-round structure
Even a Le Pen candidacy has to clear a runoff, and she lost the 2017 and 2022 second rounds. This is a secondary constraint given the eligibility problem, but it means the market would not jump to a high number on legal clearance alone — it would move to something well short of even.

The case for

- She would need to reach the runoff, which she has done in both 2017 and 2022, and then win a second round for the first time — requiring transfers from voters who have so far declined to back her.
- A collapse or fragmentation of the centre and left field, with no consolidating candidate emerging in Macron's place, would be the environment in which such a second round becomes winnable.

What to watch
Three things, in order. First, the appeal ruling on the European Parliament assistants case and — critically — whether it addresses the ineligibility separately from the conviction. Second, RN's candidate declaration and any signal that Bardella would stand aside; watch party congresses and his own contract in the same market, which moves inversely to hers. Third, the formal candidacy stage: sponsorship signatures and validation by the Conseil constitutionnel in the weeks before the first round, expected mid-April 2027, with the runoff two weeks later and settlement against the Ministry of the Interior's official result by late April. Any legal development landing after validation closes changes nothing for this market.
