What moves the probability
Points gap and mathematical elimination
The single largest input is how many points separate Antonelli from the championship leader against how many remain available, including sprint weekends. Every race that passes without a Mercedes win shrinks the arithmetic, and the contract resolves NO outright the moment the gap becomes uncatchable. This driver pushes only one way as the season runs down.
The intra-team fight with Russell
Antonelli cannot contend for the title while finishing behind his own teammate. Russell, in his fifth season at Mercedes, is the internal benchmark and takes points that a single title challenger would need. A clear reversal of that hierarchy over several weekends would be the first genuine reason to re-rate the price upwards.
Mercedes' 2026 power unit and development curve
2026 is the first year of the near-50% electrical power units and mandatory sustainable fuel, and the pecking order in a reset season can shift substantially between spring and autumn. If Mercedes finds a step out of the August shutdown that turns it into the fastest package, the whole Mercedes side of the grid re-prices. This is the main upward force available, and it is also the least predictable.
Reliability and attrition ahead of him
New power units mean unfamiliar failure modes, and a rules year raises the chance of retirements at the front. Two non-scores for the championship leader would move the arithmetic more than any single Antonelli result. It matters most in the narrow scenario where Mercedes is already winning races.
Calendar structure to 6 December
Sprint weekends raise the maximum points per event and slightly extend how long a trailing driver stays mathematically alive. The season's end date of 6 December caps everything, and the August factory shutdown compresses development into the weeks immediately after it. The net effect is that most of the remaining price movement will land on a handful of specific weekends.
The case for
- Mercedes must emerge from the August shutdown with the quickest car and Antonelli must be the driver taking the wins, not Russell.
- At least one of the drivers currently ahead of him has to lose serious points to reliability or accidents in the closing rounds โ a plausible outcome in the first year of an unfamiliar power unit.
- The 2026 regulations are new enough that mid-season form has genuinely misled before in reset years, and a large development step is the one mechanism that can change the picture quickly.
- He has to reach the final rounds still mathematically alive, because the contract closes the moment he does not.
The case against
- The season is past its midpoint and the market's deepest books, carrying nine figures of combined volume, all price him at or near the bottom of the scale.
- He is not established as Mercedes' lead scorer, and no driver has won a title while being outscored by his own teammate across the same season.
- Points still available shrink with every weekend, so time works purely against the outcome and the contract can resolve NO in autumn without waiting for 6 December.
- A rookie-to-second-year driver overturning a large mid-season deficit against established champions has no recent precedent to point to.
